They city of Kandy in Sri Lanka has been home to two of cricket’s funniest and freakiest of mishaps, one involving West Indies’ Brian Lara and other involving the two Australians, Steve Waugh and Jason Gillespie.
In a match against Sri Lanka, Brian Lara collided with a Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu while attempting a single and was carried off on a stretcher. It was later unveiled that Lara had dislocated his left elbow.
The second incident was between Steve Waugh and Jason Gillsepie during an Australia vs Sri Lanka match. Steve Waugh was running back from square leg pursuing an air borne ball, but little did he know that Jason Gillsepie was storming towards him from midwicket boundary with equal determination to be at the receiving end. As one can predict, the terrifying thought of the collision was apparent to all even before it happened.
In what followed, Waugh saw his white sweater drenched in blood from his nearly shattered nose while Gillespie broke a leg which kept him out of the national team for a long time. The incident soon achieved the feat of a major event as the two injured Australian’s were flown off on a dark green, thundering helicopter which was summoned to take them to a Colombo hospital.
