The 1986 Asia Cup was an ODI tournament that had a round robin format. The contestants played against each other once and the top two teams clashed in the final. Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in the final and lifted their first Asia Cup. On 31st March 1986, the second match of the championship was played between Bangladesh and Pakistan. The venue of this match was Tyronne Fernando Stadium in Moratuwa. The skipper of Pakistan was Imran Khan, while the captain of Bangladesh was Gazi Ashraf. The toss was won by Pakistan and they opted to field.
All out within 100
The Bangladesh innings was a low scoring affair. Only three batsmen were able to reach double figures. The top scorer for Bangladesh was Shaheedur Rahman. He faced 60 balls and hit 37 runs. His innings ended when he was caught and bowled by Abdul Qadir. Rafiqul Alam walked back to the pavilion after accumulating 14 runs in 43 deliveries. He was caught by Rameez Raja off the bowling of Wasim Akram. Golam Faruq was caught by the wicketkeeper Zulqarnain and the bowler was Abdul Qadir. Faruq made 14 runs in 29 balls. Four Bangladesh batsmen were dismissed for a duck. The first amongst these was Nurul Abedin, who was caught by Zulqarnain off the bowling of Imran Khan, when he had faced 3 balls. The second was Gazi Ashraf who was bowled by Wasim Akram on the 3rd ball Ashraf faced. Jahangir Shah was clean bowled by Wasim Akram and Samiur Rahman was stumped by Zulqarnain when Abdul Qadir was the bowler. Amongst the Pakistani bowlers, Wasim Akram was the most successful. He bowled 9 overs, out of which 2 were maidens, conceded 19 runs and took 4 wickets. Abdul Qadir was also impressive and he finished with figures of 7.3 overs, 1 maiden, 15 runs and 3 wickets. Within 35.3 overs, Bangladesh was all out for 94.
An easy chase
The Pakistan opening batsmen, Mudassar Nazar and Mohsin Khan struck a partnership of 45 runs. The first batsman to be out was Mohsin Khan when he was trapped leg before wicket by Jahangir Shah. Khan faced 44 balls and scored 28 runs. The No. 3 batsman, Rameez Raja did not last long. When he had faced 8 deliveries, he was leg before wicket for a duck. The bowler was again Jahangir Shah. The scoreboard read 2 for 55. Then, Mudassar Nazar and Javed Miandad added 30 runs. When Miandad was on 15, he was caught by Hafizur Rahman off the bowling of Gazi Ashraf for 15. Any further dismissals did not take place in the Pakistan innings. Mudassar Nazar remained unbeaten on 47 in 97 deliveries. Pakistan posted 98 runs for 3 wickets in 32.1 overs and won this match.
