The Asia Cup tournament held in 1984 was the inaugural version of this championship. It was played in Sharjah from 6th to 13th April 1984. The Asian cricketing nations, namely, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India took part in this competition. The second match of this tournament was played on 8th April 1984 at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium. India and Sri Lanka clashed against each other in this game. India was led by Sunil Gavaskar while the skipper of Sri Lanka was Duleep Mendis. India won the toss and opted to field. The umpires for this match were Shakoor Rana from Pakistan and HD Bird from England.

The Sri Lankan opener, Brendon Kuruppu was caught by Surinder Khanna on a duck and the bowler was Chetan Sharma. When the score was 17, Roy Dias returned to the pavilion on 5 off 27 balls. He was caught by Dilip Vengsarkar off the bowling of Manoj Prabhakar. Only 3 runs later, Duleep Mendis was dismissed. He was caught by Sandeep Patil off the bowling of Chetan Sharma when he had scored 1 run in 5 deliveries. The other opening batsman, Sidath Wettimuny was caught by Madan Lal off the bowling of Manoj Prabhakar. He faced 32 deliveries and made 12 runs. At this stage, Sri Lanka was struggling at 4 for 26. The team had a bad start and did not recover till the end of the innings. Ranjan Madugalle and Arjuna Ranatunga struck a partnership of 27 runs. However, Ranatunga was run out on 9 off 20 deliveries. He had hit 1 boundary. Madugalle and Aravinda de Silva also displayed a good partnership of 26 runs. On the score of 79, Aravinda de Silva was trapped leg before wicket to Madan Lal. With the assistance of 1 boundary, he made 11 runs in 27 balls. Shaul Karnain was out for a blob. He was leg before wicket to Madan Lal. The main scorer of the Sri Lankan innings, Ranjan Madugalle was bowled by Madan Lal for 38 off 76 balls. He hit 5 fours. The scoreboard read 8 for 82. Ravi Ratnayeke was bowled by Ravi Shastri for 2. Vinothen John was caught by Sunil Gavaskar off the bowling of Chetan Sharma for 2. Somachandra de Silva was not out on 8. In 41 overs, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 96. The Indian openers returned back to the pavilion only after winning the match. India scored 97 runs for no loss in 21.4 overs. Surinder Khanna remained unbeaten on 51 in 69 deliveries inclusive of 6 boundaries. Ghulam Parkar was not out on 32 after facing 68 balls. He hit 3 fours. India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the 1984 Asia Cup. Only one batsman scored a half century in this match – Surinder Khanna. He was honored as the Man of the Match.
