The 1983 Cricket World Cup enjoyed a cumulative attendance of 0.232 million in the 27 matches that were played. This championship was played in a Round Robin and Knockout format from 9th June 1983 to 25th June 1983. The players used traditional white clothing and red balls. India was placed in Group B. Out of the initial four group matches, it won 2 matches while lost two matches.
Group match against Zimbabwe
India and Zimbabwe clashed in the fifth group match of India at Nevill Ground, Tunbridge Wells on 18th June 1983. India batted for 60 overs and scored 266 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Kapil Dev remained unbeaten on 175 in 138 deliveries. Peter Rawson bowled 12 overs during which 47 runs were hit and 3 wickets fell. Zimbabwe succumbed to 235 in 57 overs. Kevin Curran was the top scorer with 73 in 93 balls. Madan Lal made 3 dismissals for 42 runs in 11 overs. Kapil was honored as the Man of the Match. India won this match by 31 runs. >
Group match against Australia
On 20th June 1983, India played its last group match against Australia at County Ground, Chelmsford. India batted first and was bowled out for 247 in 55.5 overs. Yashpal Sharma faced 40 deliveries and hit 40 runs. Rodney Hogg claimed 3 wickets in 12 overs while giving away 40 runs. In reply, Australia was bowled out for 129 in 38.2 overs. Allan Border was the top scorer with 36 off 49 balls. In 8.2 overs, Madan Lal took 4 wickets for 20 runs. India was victorious in this match by 118 runs.
India won 4 group matches and lost 2 matches and hence it accrued 16 points. It was ranked second in Group B. So, it progressed to the semi-final.
Semi-final against England
The hosts England and India participated in the semi-final match at Old Trafford, Manchester on 22nd June 1983. England was all out for 213 in 60 overs. Graeme Fowler made 33 runs in 59 balls. Kapil Dev bagged 3 wickets in 11 overs while conceding 35 runs. India replied by scoring 217 runs for 4 wickets in 54.4 overs. The top scorer was Yashpal Sharma and he hit 61 runs in 115 deliveries. Mohinder Amarnath of India was chosen as the Man of the Match. India won this match by 6 wickets and entered the final. >
Final against West Indies
The defending champions West Indies and underdogs India clashed in the final of the 1983 Cricket World Cup. India batted first and was all out for 183 in 54.4 overs. K Srikkanth was the main contributor with 38 runs in 57 deliveries. Andy Roberts bowled 10 overs, gave away 32 runs and made 3 dismissals. It appeared as though West Indies would easily win the Cup, but was bowled out for 140 in 52 overs. Their top scorer was Vivian Richards who made 33 in 28 balls. Madan Lal conceded 31 runs in 12 overs and took 3 wickets. The Man of the Match accolade was won by Mohinder Amarnath. India won this match by 43 runs. The 1983 Cricket World Cup triumph was the maiden World Cup victory by India.
