Tracy Byrd was born on August 27, 1964, a former police officer in Flint, Michigan who once held the IFBA and the WIBO Super Lightweight Championship titles. Byrd comes from a family of boxers. Her father was once the official boxing trainer for the 1992 Summer Olympics and he owned a boxing gym. Her brothers are all boxers as well. One brother, Chris, was an Olympic silver medalist with a 23-0 record. Another brother, Antoine, once lost to Ray Jones, Jr. for the Middleweight title.

Byrd went inside the ring for her first pro fight in 1996 going against and beating Sue Chase in four rounds. She defeated her opponents in fights two and three with first round knock outs. Her fourth fight was a rematch against Chase and she won once again after four rounds.

She became the IFBA world Lightweight Championship on August 2, 1997 when she defeated Nora Daigle in Billoxi, Mississippi. She lost the title in 1998 to Russian boxer Zulfia Koutdoussova. She followed this up with three wins and once again was in the ring for another shot at the WIBF's world Lightweight title, which she unfortunately lost to Laura Serrano of Mexico.

Byrd won her next chance for a world title when she soundly defeated Agnieszka Rylik in 2003 for the WIBO world junior welterweight title. She bagged the win by defeating Rylik in ten rounds and a split decision by the judges in Las Vegas.

She followed this up with her last fight to date with Belinda Laracuente for a non-title bout at Coconut Grove, Florida on June 28, 2003.
