Ricardo Lopez is a former professional boxer who held the WBA and WBC mini flyweight and IBF junior flyweight between 1985 and 2001. He is one of the 15 world boxing champions who had no loss until retirement. His son is also a boxer named Alonso Lopez, who is also undefeated in the sport.
Professional Boxing Career
Lopez was 18 years old when he debuted as a professional boxer, with a record of 26-0 when he was still an amateur boxer. In October 1990, he fought against Japanese boxing champion Hideyuki Ohashi for the WBC and lineal mini flyweight title in a 5th round knockout. By the following year, he defeated Kyung-Yung Lee, Pretty Boy Lucas, and Rocky Lin who were all champions in their respective countries. For his 20th world title, he defeated boxing champion Alex Sanchez to clinch the WBO mini flyweight title via the 5th knockout. However, this put him in an awkward situation when he said that he wanted to give the title belt to his father. The WBO President reacted to this, stating that this is a public resignation. Lopez's agent, Dwight Manley reacted against the WBO's course of action, that they should have conducted a meeting first with Lopez before deciding to strip his title.
In 2001, he fought for the IBF junior flyweight title against Will Grigsby via unanimous decision. Soon after he successfully fought against Zolani Petelo for the IBF mini flyweight title, he announced his retirement.
Lopez' Retirement and Post-Boxing Career
Lopez has drawn many fights in his life and came home victorious. He is the third world champion to retire undefeated in amateur and professional boxing. This led him to get more opportunities in the boxing world, as he soon became a boxing broadcaster for the Mexican Televisa network. He was also awarded as the greatest Strawweight and Light Flyweight Champion in 2014 and inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.Boxing Record
