The Cincinnati Reds outdueled the Phillies last night, behind the outstanding pitching of Edwin Volquez. Volquez, whose ERA of 1.32 is the best in the majors, allowed only two hits over seven innings. He hit two batters and walked two more but did not allow any to score, while ringing up 8 strikeouts.
Brett Myers had a no-hitter for the Phillies through the seventh inning, before Joey Votto doubled in Brandon Phillips. Myers scattered six walks through 7 1/3 innings of work. The RBI double was the only hit he allowed, and he too had 8 Ks.
The Phillies could not get anything going all night, with their only two hits coming off Volquez. Francisco Cordero came on in the 8th to close out the game and get his 12th save of the year.
