The Atlanta Braves have finally earned a contending position in the ML after they defeated the New York Mets 7-1 on Sunday.
The suffering Mets lost another player, Fernando Nieve, to injury while Yunel Escobar put across 2 of his 4 RBIs in a 5-run fifth inning and is 8 for 11 with 8 RBIs in 3 games.
Speaking of Escobar, Braves manager Bobby Cox said, “He’s come through the entire series with his glove and his bat. He’s tough with men on base. After we dropped him down to the fifth and sixth slot, he’s driving in a lot of runs.” Cox now looks much relieved over the Braves’ 3 out of 4 wins as the Braves overcame Florida to take the 2nd spot in the East.
Escobar struck his 9th homer in the second inning besides his run-scoring single in the fourth and put through a two-run double in the fifth to lead the Braves towards a 7-1 score. He now leads the team with 52 RBIs.
Mets starting pitcher Fernando Nieve was forced out of the game with a strained right quadriceps after going down running to first base in the second inning.
