Imagine that you are 27 years old and living a dream. You are a hard throwing left hand pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. But, you just lost your spot as a starting pitcher three weeks ago. Your mission is to replace future Hall of famer Randy Johnson today and start against the Padres. Your Dad is flying in special from Puerto Rico and has never seen you pitch in “The Show”.
The last 3 years, you are 16-26 with an ERA of 5.07. Your starting catcher is out because his wife is in labor. So? Give me the ball! Jonathan Sanchez hurled a complete game no hitter with 11 strike outs and no walks. One error in the eight inning lost a perfect game. Your comment is the game was a gift to your father.
Great game, kid. Don’t stop dreaming. Your name is right there with all the greats and you earned it. You could be back in the bullpen tomorrow, but you are the real deal. Keep humble and grateful for your talent. You never know what tomorrow may bring. Tonight, you were the best there is in baseball.
That’s why they play the game.
