Damir Džumhur is a professional tennis player, who achieved World Number 23 in July 2018. He rose to prominence after winning the 2017 St. Petersburg Open as he was the first-ever Bosnian to hold an ATP World title. He also became the first Bosnian to win the Kremlin Cup and to represent the country in the Grand Slam tournament.

Džumhur was born and raised in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he learned different sports like tennis, skiing, and football. As a teenager, he was seen in a movie called Grbavica where he was a background actor. He also had an important role in Morderischer Frieden and played the role of Duncan. Currently, he is in a relationship with Barbara Segetin and they have a son named Luka.

Junior Career

At a very young age, Džumhur showed interest in playing tennis. At the same time, his father ran a tennis school and coached him to become a better tennis player. During his junior years, he competed in local tennis events in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, and Montenegro, yet his first success was during the U–12 European Championships, where he won all of the tournaments.

In 2008, he also started joining ITF junior competitions and played 6 tournaments. He won one of those tournaments and reached the final round of another. Because of his performance as a junior, he became the World’s 299th junior player.

Professional Debut

Džumhur was able to debut as a professional tennis player in 2011 at a tournament in Zagreb. He also made it to the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Men’s Circuit tournaments and had 12 total winnings in singles events and 8 in doubles events. His performance was strong for a beginner, as he reached the final round in the 2013 Kosice Open and 2013 Poznan Open.

Due to his success, his country tapped him to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Davis Cup and Summer Olympics. In his first year being a professional tennis player, he finished in the 339th position.

Career Breakthrough

Perhaps one of his most notable performances was at the 2015 Milex Open, where he became the first Bosnian to win a professional tournament. He also joined the 2015 Morelos Open and won 4 matches, making him reach the final round at the Challenger level. In March, he debuted in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, where he played at the 2015 Miami Open. However, he lost to James Duckworth in three sets.

He also participated in the 2016 QATAR Exxonmobil Open and won against Marco Cecchinato before falling short to Tomas Berdych in straight sets. He also joined the 2016 Apia International Sydney and defeated top-seeded players like Kyle Edmund and David Goffin. He also joined in the Indian Wells but was crushed by Marcel Granollers. On his second try in Guadalajara, he decided to return to the Masters 1000.
