It was another upset by Julia Goerges in the third round of the Madrid Open against top seeded Caroline Wozniacki in their match held at the Manolo Santana Court. Wozniacki was clearly in trouble in the eight game of the deciding set although she started strong in the first sets and Goerges was the one fumbling. However, Goerges rallied from3-0 to take the first set, although the top-seeded Dane also managed with two breaks in the second set.
“The second set she started to be more aggressive and I started to get tired, so I said to myself keep yourself together for the third set and try to fight for every point,” Goerges said after the match. She made 38 unforced errors while Wozniacki managed to hit 21.The difference was in the 36 winners Georges hit compared to the Dane’s dismal 11.
Goerges is enjoying this victory at the heels of her win over top-ranked Wozniacki in the Porsche Grand Prix in April in Stuttgart, making this second win over Wozniacki a victory to remember.
“I beat her twice and twice in two weeks so I’m pretty proud of myself,” Goerges said after the two-hour plus match. She is slated to face off against Sam Stosur or Anastasia Pavyluchenkova in the last eight matches.
