Auckland, New Zealand – 2009 looks like another great year for Argentina’s tennis star Juan Martin del Potro, as he wins the Heineken Open against American Sam Querrey. Del Potro won four major tourneys last year, showing his prowess on both clay and hard courts.
Del Potro owned the match after breaking Querrey’s serve in the ninth game of the second set, and then proceeding to win, 6-4, 6-4. “Sam is a very good player with a great serve but today I won the break points and he didn’t,” Del Potro said.
Querrey was determined to win his second career ATP tournament title, his first win at Las Vegas pushing him to step up his game against fierce competitors like Del Potro. “I would like to be getting 70 percent or higher of my first serve. You can’t play average and beat guys in the top 10,” Querrey opined.
Del Potro and Querrey will next compete in the Australian Open which begins Monday, January 19. Del Potro will face Mischa Zverev of Germany in the first round, while Querrey will play against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
Juan Martin Del Potro is currently No. 9 in the world rankings, while Querrey is at no. 16.
