AO Mixed Doubles: Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk Beat Jamie Murray and Taylor Townsend

The pairing of Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk defeated Jamie Murray and Taylor Townsend in the Australian Open mixed doubles semifinals 4-6 6-3 10-5.

The pair has had a good run in the past Grand Slams. They won the last two Wimbledon mixed doubles titles.

They are third-seeded in this year’s Australian Open and are of the top favorites to win the title. They had already taken down the pairing of Storm Sanders and John Peers and that of Alan Parnaby and Andrew Harris.

Krawczyk and Harris are a pair off-court and she has spent most of her holidays with the Australian and his family over the past few years. She also spent the COVID-19 lockdowns in Australia.

Speaking of going against Harris, Krawczyk said:

“It was the first time we’ve played, hopefully the last.”

“It was tough – we knew the night before that we were playing each other because we’re obviously staying together, we had a little banter back and forth, there was a little bit of tension.”

“It was kind of weird playing him, cause he obviously knows me, he’s watched so many of my matches, I’ve watched him. I don’t know if I enjoyed it as much as I thought I was going to – it was pretty stressful, kind of awkward,” she added.

Skupski plays in the men’s doubles and is through to the quarterfinals with partner Wesley Koolhof. They will go up against Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata.

They will next face the all-Indian pairing of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the last four.

This is Mirza’s last tournament as she is set to retire in February.
