Australia into First Davis Cup Final Since 2003

The Australian team defeated the Croatian team 2-1, securing their first Davis Cup final appearance since 2003.

The tie was secured by Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson by beating Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 6-4 on Friday.

Earlier, Borna Coric gave Croatia the lead with a win against Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4 6-3. This was tied by Alex de Minaur who beat Marin Cilic 6-2 6-2.

“I was watching the guys playing Davis Cup when I was injured and doing my rehab. To play for Croatia is an amazing feeling for me,” said Coric.

Cilic was undone by his 23 unforced errors.

“Marin’s a hell of a competitor, a veteran player of our sport that has accomplished amazing things,” said De Minaur.

“I knew what to expect, so I knew it was never going to be easy.”

This is the first time that Australia broke into the finals since 2003. Should they win, it will be the 29th win for the country.

They will next meet Canada in the finals. Canada had beaten Italy on Day 5 of the Davis Cup.
