Mauresmo wins over Ivanovic in Brisbane

Jan. 8, 2009, BRISBANE, Australia – Former No. 1 player Amelie Mauresmo won over Ana Ivanovic, the season’s top-seeded player. This marks Mauresmo’s first win over a player in around 2 years.amelie mauresmo

Mauresmo dropped a serve once during her game against Ivanovic. She broke her opponent five times which led to her to advance into the semifinals of the Brisbane International.

Ana Ivanovic spent the last 12 weeks last season being on top at No. 1. This time around, however, her performance was marred with unforced errors and stinging forehands.

Although both had a rocky move into the quarterfinals and both had to save match points during the second round, Mauresmo picked up her tempo whereas Ivanovic maintained an erratic game.

Mauresmo stands to play against the winner of the other quarterfinal match. The game is between Mauresmo’s fellow Frenchwoman, third-seeded Marion Bartoli, and Italy’s darling Tathiana Garbin.

She said, “Right from the first tournament some great things are showing…I’m excited because when you work hard and you try things, you want them to work. It’s a good start (but) it’s just the first week.”

Her win against Ivanovic is indeed her first win against a top 10 player since she won against Kim Clijsters during the tournament in Antwerp. Musing about her latest victory and the fact that she has not won for quite a while, Mauresmo said, “It’s a long time. I was thinking about it when I came off the court… It’s showing I’m still there.”
