Top-seeded Maria Sakkari has made it to the semifinals of the Parma Ladies Open in Parma, Italy after defeating Maryna Zanevska 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, Thursday. This is her first semifinals since the conclusion of the grass-court season.
All of Sakkaris matches this week have gone into the third set and the one against Zanevska is no different. She will next face Danka Kovinic.
Back in June, Sakkari lost to Belinda Bencic in Berlin, and in last months US Open, she was eliminated in the second round.
The Greek player is chasing her second career title and a way back up the World Rankings. She is ranked No.7 now but back in March, she reached No.3. For this season, her best finishes include the fourth round of the Australian Open and the third round of Wimbledon.
Earlier in the year, she had also made it to the finals of the Indian Wells, her first WTA 1000 finals. She was beaten by Iga Swiatek.
Elsewhere in Parma, Sloan Stephens lost to Danka Kovinic 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, who now advances to the semifinals against Jasmine Paolini who is coming off a win against Elisabetta Cocciaretto 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
