Team Europe celebrates after they defeated Team World for the Laver Cup in tennis, Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, in Boston.

The 2022 Laver Cup is less than a week away and it is going to feature some of the biggest names in tennis. Team Europe alone will have the Big Three in its ranks, plus Andy Murray will be playing too. Team World, on the other hand, will feature American big hitters Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. They also have Felix Auger-Aliassime on their side, plus a few more top contenders.

Since Roger Federer announced on September 15 that he was retiring from the ATP Tour and will no longer be playing in the Grand Slams, interest in the Laver Cup skyrocketed and it has become one of the most anticipated matches of the year.

The tournament is set to run from September 23 to 25 and it will be held in London at The O2 Arena.

Here is everything you need to know about the Laver Cup, who is in it, who are the favorites to win, and how to watch it.

What is the Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup is an international mens tennis tournament established in 2017. It is played indoors on a hard surface and is usually played after the US Open concludes. It was named after Rod Laver, considered one of the best players in the 20th century.

Roger Federer was instrumental in the creation of the Laver Cup. He says he was inspired by the Ryder Cup.

There are two teams Team World and Team Europe. The teams are made up of six players. The first three players on the team get to play in the cup based on their ATP rankings while the other three are Captains Picks. The first team to reach 13 points will be the winner.

The 2022 Cup is the 5th edition of the tournament since the 2020 event was not held because of COVID-19 restrictions.

How Does it Work?

12 matches will be played over the three days that the Laver Cup is held totaling nine singles matches and 3 doubles.

Matches played on Day 1 will be equal to 1 point, matches on Day 2 will have 2 points, and matches played on Day 3 will have 3 points. The first team to reach 13 points will win. The matches are played best of three with a 10-point tiebreaker.

Who are in the Tournament this Year?

This year, Team Europe will be made up of:

Captain: Bjorn Borg
Vice-captain: Thomas Enqvist

Team World is made up of:

Captain: John McEnroe
Vice-captain: Patrick McEnroe

Is Roger Federer Playing?

Yes, Roger Federer will be part of Team Europe. The 20-time Grand Slam winner has announced that he is retiring from the ATP Tour and will no longer play in any Grand Slams but he has confirmed for the Laver Cup.

The Swiss tennis champion has had to deal with a knee injury and surgeries to help deal with it for the past three years.

His retirement announcement and revelation that the Laver Cup will be his last professional match for a while has driven ticket sales to the O2 Arena event. Some tickets are even selling for upwards of 26,000 pounds.

Which Team Has Won the Most?

Since its inception, Team Europe has dominated the tournament. They have won all four editions so far while captained by Bjorn Borg.

This is something that Team World team captain John McEnroe is looking to put an end to this year. And by the looks of it, he has a fighting chance with big players like Tiafoe and Fritz on his team.

But Team Europe has Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. They also have current US Open Runner-up Casper Ruud.

Who are the Favorites to win?

With their streak, Team Europe continues to be a favorite. This is reflected by many sports betting sites.

Not only is team Europe a favorite because they have won all of the Laver Cup tournaments to date, but it also appears that they have a stronger team. Four of the team members on Team Europe are in the Top 10 of the World Rankings, even Federer holds a protected ranking of No.9. Their lowest ranked player is Andy Murray who is ranked No.43.

For Team World, on the other hand, their highest ranked player is Taylor Fritz, who sits at No.12 in the ATP World Ranking. Their lowest ranked player is Jack Sock, who is No.127 in the world.
