Nick Kyrgios has won his first title in three years, ending Yoshihito Nishiokas amazing run 6-4 6-3 in the finals. The Wimbledon runner-up has not won a title since 2019 when he won the same event in Washington.

Showing consistency in his game, the 27-year-old did not drop serve in the tournament. Currently at No.63 in the world rankings, he will rise to No.37 after winning his seventh career title.

“I feel like my motivation is a lot higher than it used to be. … There is a small window; I should capitalize on it,’’ said Kyrgios.

“I don’t care about what people say about my tennis, like, ‘Always disrespectful to the sport,’ all this, all that, he said. “I know that, deep down, I try really hard to do it my own way. I know that I inspire millions of people, and I’m just playing for them.’’

He also added that the win was very emotional for him.

“It’s just very emotional for me,” he said in a post-match interview.

“To see where I was at last year to now, it’s just an incredible transformation. I just came out with great energy. I knew that I had experience on my side today. I love this court, I’ve played so many good matches here, so I’m just really happy with myself.

“I’ve been in some really dark places. Just to be able to turn it around… There are so many people who have helped me get there, but myself, I’ve shown some serious strength to just continue and persevere and get through all those times and be able to still perform and win tournaments like this one.”

Nishioka also had a great run at the Citi Open said, “I couldn’t figure out his service game.” The Japanese player who is ranked 96th in the world managed to take down Andrey Rublev in the semifinals.

Kyrgios appeared transformed at the Citi Open and no outbursts and on-court behavior made headlines like they did in Wimbledon. The Australian appeared more focused.

After the opening match, he said, “I have been training really hard.”

“I just feel like I’m in such a better place with my tennis. Mentally as well. I wanted to show that to the fans.”

Last year was a really poor performance from me, to be honest. I just really wanted to make sure I came out and gave them a good show, just to redeem myself. Just looking around the crowd, such an amazing tournament. I had such a bad taste in my mouth from last year.
