Serena Williams has won her first tennis match since stepping away from the court for a year.

It was a doubles match and she was paired with Ons Jabeur. They took down Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova 6-2 6-3 13-11.

Williams who was warmly welcomed on the court said, “I caught some fire behind me,” the 40-year-old Williams said. “I needed that. It was good.

She is set to appear at Wimbledon when it opens on June 27. She had earlier received a wildcard entry as she did not make use of her protected rankings.

The last time she played professionally was at last years Wimbledon when she was forced to retire from the match after she lost her footing and sustained an injury.

Since then, she has dropped to No.1, 204 in the world rankings.

“I love tennis and I love playing otherwise I wouldnt be here but I also love what I do off the court, Williams said.

In the doubles match, Williams appeared to struggle at the start but her agility had improved noticeably by the second set.

When talking about her pairing with Jabeur, she said, “It was fun to play with Ons. It was great. We had a lot of fun and our opponents played amazing. We were happy to stay in there.”
