Despite appearing in the public eye, Peng Shuai remained controversial. Although the world seemed to confide in her, still WTA is expressing deep concerns about her current situation. Accusing a powerful person from a governing body is a serious matter that’s why WTA and a lot of women organizations can’t help but worry over her.
Steve Simon, WTA Chairman, attempted to reach Peng and sent her two emails, however, her replies to his email seemed to be influenced by other people. He thought that Peng may not be free from censorship or the Chinese government coerced her not to engage in any communication with anyone.
Peng Shuai is a talented Chinese tennis player who played for Wimbledon and French Open. After her public accusation via her Twitter account, the doubles champion was not seen by the public eye for more than 2 weeks. She said in a post that Zhang Gaoli, former vice premier, had forced her into having sex with her, and they had an intermittent relationship.
On Sunday, Peng appeared in a video call with the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach. Since the Winter Olympics is bound to be held in Beijing and the European Union and the UN have called out China for more evidence of Peng’s whereabouts.
In the video call, Peng thanked the IOC for their concern for her well-being and told them that she is currently in Beijing with her family. She was also asking for privacy at this time.
China’s ministry, however, reacted that people should stop hyping Peng’s controversy because everything is fine with Peng.
