After the Former Number One Naomi Osaka lost against Leyla Fernandez in the third round in the US Open, Osaka also announced her withdrawal from the Indian Wells.
Three weeks later, she acknowledged her potential return despite resting from the sport for the meantime.
As the tennis superstar appeared on HBO’s The Shop, she said that she is sure to be back playing tennis “probably soon”. She said that she loves tennis, and she’s playing probably soon because she had the itch of playing and competing again. She just needed the time to find her joy back, that she’s playing tennis for herself.
She shared during an emotional interview that it’s important for her to play tennis for herself once she returned to the court. She mentioned that she used to have fun in competitions and being in her usual competitive self, however, it turned out to be more stressful for her.
Osaka is an advocate of mental health for players. It’s noted that she had withdrawn from the French Open after she boycotted the post-game press conference. She had hoped that whatever penalty that the French Open might charge against her, they would donate it to organizations that support mental health.
Osaka made a comeback during the Tokyo Olympics in July, and she was one of the torchbearers. However, her Olympics journey didn’t come out successful either. The 2022 Australian Open will be scheduled for January 17, and Osaka has no announcement yet whether she will participate or not.
