French Open champion Ashleigh Barty will finish the year as the women’s world number one after winning the WTA Finals title in Shenzhen on Sunday.
Barty defeated Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3, with the triumph landing her the biggest winners’ wind fall in tennis history of $US4.42 million.
“It’s been the most incredible year for me,” Barty said, having started the year ranked 15th.
The Australian won three singles title in 2019, including lifting the trophy at Roland Garros and now the prestigious WTA Finals.
Teenage US Open champion Bianca Andreescu is fifth, with Svitolina’s run to the final moving her up two spots to sixth.
The triumph was Djokovic’s fifth Paris Masters title and a big warning ahead of the upcoming season-ending ATP Finals in London.
Djokovic will now hope to triumph in London to finish the year as number one, currently occupied by Rafael Nadal.
“I’m in a better position (than I was before this tournament, but the only thing I can do is to focus on my game,” Djokovic said.
