Nadal advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Mardy Fish, currently ranked at No. 35, in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 match early September 4, 2008 morning. The reigning French Open, Wimbledon, and Olympic champion defeated Fish in a game that lasted for two hours and 40 minutes, ending the day of numerous matches with sincere words of thanks to fans who had stayed to watch the game.

The win was very important to Nadal who aimed to play at all the semi-finals of the Grand Slams of the same year. To top off his happiness, Nadal says, “I’m very happy for being the first time in the semi-finals of the US Open. For sure you want to play good in all places. In the past here I did not always do well.”

Murray, so far, has won 17 of his recent 19 ATP matches. The last few times he lost to Nadal was when they came face to face at the Wimbledon quarter-finals, and at the Montreal semi-finals.

Murray says of the impending semi-finals match and his win against Del Potro, “I’m very relieved. I had my chances to put it away earlier and let it slip away…It feels great to be in the semi-finals. After a match like that it makes it feel even better.”
