Ashleigh Barty of Australia reacts during the ladies' singles fourth round of the Championships, Wimbledon against Alison Riske

World number one Ashleigh Barty has crashed out of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships with a fourth round loss to American Alison Riske on Monday.

Riske, ranked 55th in the world, triumphed over the 2019 French Open champion 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Barty had won 15 consecutive matches coming into the clash, including last month’s French Open final and appeared on her way after winning the first set.

Riske hit back with an impressive response, producing some excellent tennis to stun the Australian.

“I’m so excited. Ultimately I’m so proud of myself how I handled today’s match,” Riske said.

“I had to play aggressive and take it to Ash and that’s what I did today.

“I couldn’t be more proud of myself. I couldn’t say what this means to me.

“Obviously getting to the quarter-finals is amazing but just the way I’ve been fighting is the most exciting for me.”

Riske will play either Serena Williams or Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarter-finals.
