Double is a football term that is used to describe an achievement of a team that wins its primary cup competition and its country’s top tier division in a single season. It can also mean winning over a team in the same season twice or home and away.

Historically, the first ever club to have experienced such achievement was the Preston North End. The club won the inaugural seasons of the Football League as well as the FA Cup in 1889. On the other hand, the team that holds the most doubles record is the team from Northern Ireland, Linfield. This team achieved a total of 24 doubles.

Top English Clubs that Won Doubles

The English football clubs are some of the most competitive clubs in the whole world because of the competitions they have, which include the FA Cup, League Cup and the famous Premier League. Out of the dozens of clubs, there are those who are recognized as the best of the best because of their double achievements. These clubs have earned doubles in both domestic and European competitions.

Top on the list is Manchester City. This team had won both the League Cup and Premier League in 2013-2014 and 2017 and 2018 seasons and did a treble in season 2018-2019, winning not only the Premier League and League Cup but also the FA Cup.

Another team that made it to the list is the Arsenal Ladies. This team in the 2006-2007 won four competitions including the FA Cup, Premier League, League Cup and Champions League.

Manchester United is also a force to be reckon with. They are the only team that held back-to-back wins in the Premier League. On top of this, the team also won a total of four doubles. Three of these were winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup while the fourth was winning the League Cup and Premier League.

Furthermore, Chelsea also tops the list when it comes to winning doubles especially in the domestic scene. The team won a total of four doubles, three of which included winning both the Premier League and FA Cup in one season. The fourth one is wining the FA Cup and League Cup at the same time.

Last but definitely not the last on this list is Liverpool. They come with the most doubles win in the domestic level. These wins started in 2004 when they won both the League Cup and Premier League. After that, in the 2006-2007 season, they won both FA and League Cups. By 2009-2010 they conquered again the Premier League and paired it with a win in the FA Cup. Their fifth and recent double is in 2014 -2015 season, which involved winning the League Cup and Premier League.
