The Cruyff Turn is a kind of turn or dribble that is designed by Johann Cruyff to lose an opponent. The turn is done by gently kicking the ball sideways by one foot. This foot that does the kicking must do it behind the standing leg of the player.
The dribbling maneuver was created in 1972 World Cup, when Holland played against Sweden. During the game, Johann Cruyff was heavily guarded by Jan Olsson while he was in control of the ball and in an attacking position, but was not facing his opponent’s goal. During this crucial moment, he feigned a pass before demonstrating the first Cruyff Turn. He dragged the ball behind his standing leg while at the same time making a 180-degree turn and speeding away.
Due to the turn’s unpredictability, effectiveness and simplicity, it remains one of the most commonly used dribbling motion from its creation and until today.
Cruyff Turn Steps
Though the dribbling move is considered simple, it is best for players to master every step as to how it is done to ensure maximum benefit.
The first step to do in performing a Cruyff Turn is to draw one foot before feinting a pass down the field. Instead of actually using the foot to pass the ball, this foot stops over the ball and motion it backwards and behind the standing leg.
After doing the first step, the next move is to turn 180 degrees at the hip and shifting the weight to the other foot before dribbling away in the opposite direction with great speed.
When done successfully, defensive players can track down the feint, but will have difficulty in keeping up after the turn is made and when the player speeds up.
Practice Drills for Improving Cruyff Turn Maneuver
Coaches of football teams allow their players to do several practice drills to help them perfect their Cruyff Turn. These drills need proper set-up which will involve a ball and cones that are set 5 meters away from each other. It is also advisable for players to allocate 10 minutes for warm-up, 15 minutes for sessions and 10 minutes for developments as well as 15 minutes for game situations and 10 minutes for warm downs.
After making the initial set, coaches will let two players stand along each side of the cone. These players will then take turns in dribbling the ball towards the second cone before performing a turn and coming back to their starting position. This drill will be repeated for all players of the team. While doing this drill, coaches must make sure that players experience doing drill with both feet.
Once the first drill has been completed, players can now stand along opposite cones and take turns to dribble to the second cone and doing the turn. This drill will also involve a second player which will act as a defender and put pressure on the player doing the drill.
