The “captain” or “skipper” of a football team is the player who leads the team on the pitch. He wears an armband, known as the captain’s armband, and is often the most experienced or one of the seniormost players of the team. He is entrusted with a lot of responsibilities.

It is the captain of a football team who participates in the coin toss prior to the kickoff and penalty shootouts. The captain is expected to be the leader on the pitch and towards whom the other team members look for morale inspiration and boost. The manager of the team might also consult the captain on certain occasions and often takes him to press conferences.
