Timewasting is a term used in football to describe the actions of a team that are deliberately motivated towards wasting the time. It is a strategy used by a team to waste as much time in a football match (especially towards the end) as they can by deploying useless but legal tactics.
Bringing on substitutes very late in the game, feigning of injury by the players, delaying in taking free-kicks and throw-ins and delay by the goalkeeper in taking the goal-kick all contribute to timewasting. Often, players take the ball towards the corner flag and just stay there with the ball in order to waste precious little time.
Timewasting is usually done by teams that can winning by a slim margin towards the end of the match. The match officials have now become strict and issue yellow cards to players found guilty of time wasting.
