A cap for a football player is an appearance that he makes for a certain football club or country. The term originates from the tradition in the UK of awarding a cap (a headgear) to every player in an international football match.

The term officially came into recognition on May 10, 1886 and is now regularly used in football. In mens’ football, the international record number of caps won by a player is held by Mohamed Al-Deayea of Saudi Arabia with 181 international caps for his country.
