Spezia was formed in 1906 by a Swiss banker Hermann Hurni in La Spezia in Liguria. Spezia played top clubs in Italy’s elite tier in the 1920s but spent a long time in the lower divisions after relegation from Serie B in 1951. Spezia returned to Serie B in 2006, albeit battling off-field issues such as bankruptcy.
In 2020, they were promoted to Serie A via the Serie B promotion playoffs. In 2022-23, Spezia were relegated back to Serie B after losing a one-off playoff against Hellas Verona.
