Based out of Lanus, in Buenos Aires, playing in the Primera A division has not come easy for Atletico Lanus. The club was in debt amounting to US$ 2million, in 1978, and in the time of trouble, fans came forward to help. The 2,000-members of the club rose to over 10,000 by 1981, taking the club out of their financial trouble. Now, in the top flight, the team also has a professional Basketball team that plays in the Argentine top division.

The team was mostly a part of the second division in the early part of the professional era. In 1950, 1964, 1971 and 1992, they managed to win promotion by winning the title in the second division. During their tenure as a part of the Argentine football league structure, Lanus have also had to play third division football in its lifetime. They escaped that misery by winning the 1981 third division title.
