FC Aarau were established in 1902. They won their first Swiss league title in 1912 and repeated the feat two years later in 1914.

Aarau had to wait until 1993 before they won the league championship for the third time in their history. They won the Swiss Cup in 1985 and the Swiss League Cup in 1982.
