Based out of the capital city of Montevideo, Danubio Futbol Club is a professional football team that plays in the Uruguayan league structure. The team was formed by some students belonging to the Republica de Nicaragua school in Montevideo and the team was named after the Danube river, in Bulgaria. The team has been extremely prolific in its time and has had players like Alvaro Recoba, Marcelo Zalayeta, Ruben Olivera and Ruben Sosa passing through its ranks. Players like Nery Castillo and Diego Forlan were members of the youth squad before they decided to move on to other clubs.

Danubio have won the 2006-07 title of the Uruguayan first division football league. This was their third title after the 1988 and 2004 triumphs at the top level. At the international level, the team has appeared in the Copa Libertadores 6 times however never having won a trophy, they only managed to reach the semi-finals once, in 1989. In their 5 Copa Sudamericana championship journeys, they have managed reach the first round thrice, their best performances. Their quarter-final defeat in 1997 was their best ever performance in the 4 attempts they have had at the Copa CONMEBOL.
