He was signed by Russian Premier League’s FC Zenit on 2rd August, 2010. Luciano Spalletti, the club’s coach considers him an important player of the side.

Bruno Alves made his international debut in a game against Kuwait in June 2007. The match resulted in a 1-1 draw. He was chosen as a backup for 2008 UEFA Euro and appeared in a group stage match in which Portugal lost to Switzerland by 2-0. Alves played an important role as a regular starter in FIFA 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
