A goalkeeper from Peru, Raul Fernandez Valverde began his professional career with the youth team of Universitario de Deportes. He gradually made his way up to the first team of the same club, where he currently plays as well.
During the Clausura 2007, Julio Gomez, coach of Universitario de Deportes, picked Raul Fernandez as starting goalkeeper, even though Jose Carvallo had been playing in that position for some time. During his debut match against Total Clean, Valverde managed to gain Gomez’s trust with his goalkeeping skills. Since that game Fernandez has been playing as the starting goalkeeper for the team.
Fernandez has played for the Peruvian National football team as well, in a friendly against Costa Rica. He has been a part of the team for title wins including the Torneo Aperture 2008 and the Campeonato Descentralizado 2009.
