A professional goalkeeper at the highest level of the game, Marcelo German Montoya began his playing career at a local club in Cordoba called Belgrano de Cordoba. He was with the club from 2000 till 2007 and in those years, played almost 70 matches for the first team. Despite excellent matches in the 2006 season, Belgrano were relegated from the Primera Division.
In 2007, he came to Velez Sarsfield where he has stayed since, playing over 35 matches. Although he came on only as a substitute for the injured first-choice keeper, Sebastian Peratta, he stayed on as first choice for a few games even after Peratta’s return to fitness.
