Gilberto Silva is a Brazilian football player who plays defensive midfield for Arsenal.
He is a product of the Brazilian club America’s youth academy and joined the A-team in 1997. He played for the club for three years and was picked up by Atletico Mineiro in the Brazilian top division.
In 2002 he was part of the Brazilian national team that won the World Cup, he played all seven matches. After his performance in the World Cup Silva was acquired by Arsenal for 4,5 million pounds. Since then he has won the Premier League and the two FA Cups with the club.

Silva is noted for scoring the first competitive goal at the new Emirates Stadium.
In 2006, Silva was made vice-captain of Arsenal and in 2007 he was Brazil’s captain in the Copa America. His contract with Arsenal extends to 2009.
