He trained at La Masia and signed with Barcelona in 2014, spending time in the club’s academy for almost the next decade before he broke into the first team as a 15-year-old.
Yamal had been selected by ex-Barcelona boss Xavi to train with the first team in September 2022. He was handed his first-team debut in April 2023 against Real Betis in La Liga, making him the fifth youngest player in league history, at 15 years, nine months and 16 days old.
He broke out in 2023-24, winning man of the match in a 4-3 win over Villarreal where he provided two assists. He scored his maiden Barcelona goal against Granada in October 2023.
Across his maiden full season for Barca, Yamal broke many records having made 50 appearances across all competitions, becoming the youngest starter for Barcelona in La Liga history. He was also the youngest player to score in La Liga history and Barcelona history.
International Career
Yamal was a Spain youth international for their U15 and U16 sides as well as playing for the country at the 2023 European U17 Championship. He also made his senior international debut as a 16-year-old in September 2023 against Georgia. He scored on debut, breaking another record as the youngest player and goal scorer in national team history.
In mid-2024, he was named in Spain’s Euro 2024 squad, becoming the youngest player to feature in the tournament at the age of 16 years and 338 days. Yamal scored Spain’s equalising goal in the 2-1 semi-final win over France.
