Career
Switzerland-born Rakitic started professionally with FC Basel where he was named the Best Young Player in the 2006–07 Swiss Super League season and won Swiss Goal of the Year, before earning a move to Germany to Schalke 04 in 2007.
In Germany, Rakitic enjoyed three-and-a-half strong seasons during a period when Schalke were among the top Bundesliga contenders and reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

He left Schalke for Sevilla in 2011 for 2.5m euros, where he became a key figure for the Andalusian. He was Sevilla’s skipper when they lifted the 2013-14 Europa League title before moving to Barcelona in 2014.
Rakitic spent six seasons with Barcelona where he won four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys and one UEFA Champions League, making more than 300 appearances for the Catalans before re-joining Sevilla in 2020.
Internationally, Rakitic played under-age football for Switzerland but opted to play for Croatia at senior level, debuting in 2007. He was part of the Croatia side that reached the 2018 World Cup final.
