Stefanus Johannes Schaars> is a Dutch football player who presently plays for AZ, Eredivisie club and also for the Dutch national football team as a midfielder. This midfielder stands 1.77 meter tall and captains his club too.
The year 2003 proved successful for Stefanus when he made his debut at Vitesse Arnhem at the club on 9th March with a 4-1 away match. The team though lost to FC Utrecht and Schaars was with the team till 2005. From 2005 onwards, he got transferred to AZ club. Whilst with the Vitesse team, he made 44 caps and scored 4 goals. For AZ team, till date he has made 100 appearances and scored 6 goals.
His debut for the national team came in 2006 at a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland, with the former winning the match by 4-0. Earlier, Stijn was the captain of the team that won the UEFA under 21 championship in 2006. However, due to an ankle injury he could not take part at the most of the matches of the 2006-07 season. Due to this, his chances of taking part in the Euro 2008 got ruled out.
However, Schaars was included in the preliminary squad for the FIFA World cup in 2010 in South Africa. For the Netherlands team, so far, Stijn has made 12 caps.
With the AZ team, Schaars won the Dutch Championship once in 2008-09 and the Dutch Super Cup in 2009. With right to international honors, his team won UEFA Euro under 21 in 2006 and also the Group E champions at the FIFA World Cup 2010.
