John Heitinga is a Netherlands international football player who currently features for the Premier League club Everton. He is a versatile player who can feature either as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder.
Heitinga commenced his professional club football career at Dutch giants Ajax and was part of their set-up between 2001 and 2008. He scored 17 goals in 152 league appearances, winning the Eredivisie title in 2002 and 2004 and the KNVB Cup in 2002, 2006 and 2007.
In the summer of 2008 Heitinga moved to Atletico Madrid but failed to impress at the Spanish club and joined Everton after just one season. At the Merseyside club, the Dutchman regained his old form and soon became an important player in David Moyes’s first team. Since 2009 Heitinga has featured in over 110 league appearances for the Toffees.
Heitinga made his international appearance for the Netherlands against the United States of America in a friendly international on February 18, 2004. He has played for his country at Euro 2004, 2006 World Cup finals, Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup finals. He has played 85 times for the Oranje.
