Hull City boss Steve Bruce has labelled his side’s final day promotion to the Championship as “ridiculous”.
The Tigers earned promotion back to the top flight after a nerve-wracking 2-2 draw with Cardiff City. Watford would have pipped Hull for promotion had they defeated Leeds on Saturday, but went down 2-1.
The drama continued at the death after Proschwitz missed a late spotkick, before Nicky Maynard scored from a penalty in the 95th minute to ensure it was a tense finale.
“I’ve been in the game a long, long time but I’ve never quite witnessed anything like that,” Bruce said.
“For 10 or 12 minutes, it was ridiculous. I’ve seen people waiting in tunnels, walking in corridors, hiding in toilets. It was really incredible.”
McShane added: “You can’t write it really, it was up there with the Man City and United at the end of the Premier League last year.
“It’s been a whirlwind. It was surreal watching the Watford game. I was getting my head around the fact that we were in the playoffs. Someone on the pitch said Watford were 2-1 up. I was devastated. But then people went wild.”
