Atletico Madrid have taken the rare step of confirming that they are not seeking a new coach. Current coach Javier Aguirre has come under a lot of pressure as Atletico have been reduced from La Liga contenders to fighting for the prized fourth spot.
Moreover, Aguirre’s current contract at Atleti expires at the end of the season and Aguirre has been linked with a coaching job at the Mexican national team. But there is a clause in Aguirre’s contract that shall automatically keep him in the job should Atletico qualify for Europe next season.
Atletico Madrid have now released a statement on their statement officially denying that the club is searching for a new coach. The statement reads as follows:
“Atletico Madrid, in the wake of reports appearing in various media outlets, would like to state they has not made contact with any manager with regard to coaching the team next season.
“The reality is that the team, with five weeks left, continues on the path to reach the goal set of finishing in a Champions League place.
“When the league comes to an end, the board of directors and the sporting department will analyse and assess the performance of both the coaching staff and the players, with the intention of taking the necessary decisions to improve the level of the squad for next season.”
But the irony is that the statement will actually increase rather then allay the speculation on Javier Aguirre’s future at the Vicente Calderon.
