Racing Coach Denies Valencia Contract

Racing Santander coach Marcelino has arguably been the coach of the season in La Liga as his side Racing look to emerge as the surprise package of the season and finish fourth in the table at the end of the season, thereby qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Racing are just 1 point off fourth place Atletico Madrid in fifth and have a great chance of qualifyting for the Champions League. Maybe they are overachieving this season but there’s no denying that they have been the most consistent side in La Liga this season.

No wonder that coach Marcelino has been linked with a coaching job at Valencia for next season but the highly rated Racing Santander coach denies that any deal has been struck and insists:

“There is contact between my representative and Valencia, like there has been with others, but nothing more. There is nothing signed. If there was something I would say so.

“In the last few weeks since the first contact there has been an offer. There was contact, more than a month ago, but no agreement. I would tell Racing, of course. I am not going to do anything behind the club’s back. I have a great relationship with the president.

“I would never do anything to damage this club. What I am not going to do is create an auction. Money is a factor that has to come into it, but it will not decide anything.

“But I can assure you that nothing has been decided. I have spoken to Racing and if there are negotiations or anything else with another club I will tell them.”

A number of other notable figures have been linked with a coaching post at the Mestalla, such as the Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez. Yet if Valencia drop down into the Segunda Division hell at the end of the season, then you would well imagine that Valencia would have to settle for lower level coaches.
