New Real Madrid signing Antonio Rudiger has revealed he had interest from Barcelona but never entertained it after being unveiled following his move from Chelsea.

The 29-year-old Germany international defender has penned a four-year deal with the Spanish champions and was unveiled by Real at their training ground on Monday.

Rudiger had spent five years with Chelsea, but opted to exit as a free agent, prompting speculation linking him with several clubs.

“Yes, there was interest from Barcelona,” Rudiger told reporters on Monday. “But I told my brother it was Real or nothing.”

He added: “The first time there was contact it wasn’t really myself, it was my agent. That was in September last year.

“The second time, when I spoke directly with Mr (Carlo) Ancelotti, was in April. That was the most important moment. That was when I made my choice.”

Rudiger impressed Real in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, when Chelsea faced Los Blancos, who went on to win the tournament.

He added that he wasn’t afraid of the pressure that comes with joining the 14-time European champions.

“At the end of the day, it’s a very big club,” he said.

“I feel very fortunate to be here and do what I do. It’s a pressure I enjoy having.”

The situation, which was expected, but leaves Chelsea needing to bolster their defensive ranks amid talk that Romelu Lukaku is set to exit to re-join Inter Milan after an unhappy season in England for the Belgian.
