Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers speaks with Jamie Vardy after the Premier League match between Southampton and Leicester City at St Mary's Stadium

Jamie Vardy was benched but Leicester City still managed to cruise past struggling Newcastle 4-0 with Youri Tielemans netting a double on Sunday.

Tielemans opened the scoring from the spot in the 38th minute, with Patson Daka doubling their advantage early in the second half.

The Belgian and James Maddison added further goals in the final 10 minutes to round out the win, with Vardy not required off the bench.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers explained: “We have an unbelievable striker in Jamie Vardy but he is human so we have to look after him.

“Patson Daka is very important for us. He is a great goalscorer and he showed that.”

Leicester moved up to eighth on the table with the win, while Newcastle are second last despite their recent change of ownership.

The cashed-up Magpies are staring at relegation, with only 10 points from 16 games.

“The players won’t have felt inferior,” Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “They will have felt competitive and hopefully they reflect in the right way.

“Every game is difficult. Obviously Anfield is a tough assignment for us but we will do everything to try and win the match.”

Elsewhere, Conor Gallagher netted a double as Crystal Palace won 3-1 over Everton, while Burnley and West Ham United played out a 0-0 draw.
