Los Rojiblancos enhanced their chances of winning the La Liga title this season with a narrow 2-1 win against Sociedad at home.
Yannick Carrasco put Atletico in the lead at the Wanda Metropolitano after just 16 minutes when he collected Marcos Llorente’s ball over the top of the Sociedad defence and finished past Alex Remiro.
Atletico doubled the advantage on 28 minutes. Luis Suarez found Angel Correa with an excellent through-ball, and the latter made no mistake with a first-time finish.
The Madrid outfit suffered a late scare when Igor Zubeldia halved the deficit for Sociedad on 83 minutes.
The win means that Atletico are now at the top of the La Liga table with 80 points from 36 matches.
Barcelona in second have picked up 76 points from 36 matches, while defending champions Real Madrid are third on 75 points from 35 games.
Atletico manager Simeone has said that his players had to be suffer and is not getting away despite his side being on the verge on winning the title this season.
Simeone said: “We knew we had to win against an opponent who away from home does things very well. We had a great first half and second half as well, but in this tight end of the season their goal made us really suffer in those last few minutes. We need to rest.
“It’s been a very tough season and it’s going to be tough until the end. It started too fast and it’s something that’s affected all teams, we’re not the exception. We continue, game-by-game, knowing Sunday will be another important and difficult game.”
