Bayern Munich are the best team in the world according to Schalke 04 manager David Warner, after watching his side get thrashed 8-0 by the Bavarian on the opening night of the German Bundesliga season on Friday.

Serge Gnabry netted a hat-trick as last season’s treble winners laid down a major marker for the 2020-21 season, racing to a 3-0 half-time lead against the Royal Blues.

Leon Goretzka, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Jamal Musiala and new signing Leroy Sane were all among the scorers in the stunning result.

Bayern were crowned European champions after a run to the final which included a 3-0 win over Olympique Lyon and 8-2 victory over Barcelona, while they won the Bundesliga by 13 points and the DFB-Pokal final 4-2 over Leverkusen.

Despite Bayern’s hectic schedule, having won the Champions League final less than a month ago, they continued their absolute dominance earning praise from Wagner.

“It was a poor performance, we didn’t play well,” Wagner said.

“Bayern were in outstandingly good form. At the moment they’re probably the world’s best team, they showed that today.

“We must lick our wounds and show a reaction next time.”

Schalke’s French defender Benjamin Stambouli agreed with Wagner’s sentiment, lavishing praise on Hansi Flick’s Bayern.

Bayern arent only the best team in the Bundesliga but the best team in Europe, in the world,” Stambouli said.

“We were up against a fantastic team. We must learn from that, from the experiences we made today. Its always tough to lose in such a way.”

Meanwhile, Flick was delighted with Bayern’s display which he said put down a marker for their opponents for the season ahead.

“Before the game we said we wanted to lay down a marker, and we did so with aplomb,” Flick said.

“We wanted to show that we are also ready for this season. I’m glad that we’ve brought such a performance onto the pitch today.”
