Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been crowned the world’s best men’s player for 2019 at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan on Monday night.
The Argentine forward won the award with 46 rank points ahead of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk on 38 points and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo on 36.
The gong is another accolade is an already bulging list for Messi who has won five Ballon d’Ors along with six European Golden Shoes and eight La Liga Best Player awards.
The award criteria was for the period from July 16 2018 to July 19 2019, covering the 2018-19 season where Messi’s Barcelona won La Liga by 11 points with the Argentine top scoring with 36 strikes.
“I want to thank those who gave this prize to me,” Messi said.
“Even though individual awards are a secondary thing to me, it is a unique moment and it is good to celebrate it with my family and my children.”
Meanwhile, Megan Rapinoe won the Best FIFA Women’s Player gong with 46 points, after USA’s World Cup triumph.
Liverpool’s Alisson won the top goalkeeper award while Jurgen Klopp claimed the best coach gong following the Reds’ UEFA Champions League success.
Messi was pipped for the FIFA Puskas Award, for best goal, with Hungarian Daniel Zsori crowned for his effort for Debrecen against Ferencvaros in February.
