Manchester United attacking midfielder Juan Mata has said that he wants to win the Europa League this season.
Mata won the Europa League with Chelsea during the 2012-13 season and with United in 2016-17.
The 31-year-old Spain international has said that he wants to clinch the European competition for the third time in his career this campaign.
United’s official website quotes Mata as saying: “It was the first time the club won this tournament and it was great to beat an Ajax side, who went on to be a great team in the following years. Whenever you win a European competition, it’s special. I hope I can win it for a third time.”
Europa League campaign
United are playing in the Europa League this season after failing to finish in the top four of the Premier League during the 2018-19 campaign.
The Red Devils will kicked off their Group L campaign with a match against FC Astana at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
Partizan Belgrade and AZ Alkmaar are the other two clubs in the group, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are the favourites to win it.
With competition for a place in the top four of the Premier League table this season fierce, United do have the route of winning the Europa League in 2019-20 and then booking their place in the group stage of the Champions League in 2020-21.
Mata is one of the best attacking players in the Premier League and is a key figure at United.
The former Chelsea star has made two starts and three substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Red Devils so far this season.
During the 2018-19 campaign, Mata made 16 starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for United, scoring three goals and providing two assists in the process.
